Five Pieces of Advice For a Younger Me

For the From Left to Write Book Club, we read "29." This post is inspired by the book.

I've always assumed I'd age well. My mom has always looked terrific for her age, so I just assumed I would too. Aging was something I didn't really give much thought. I never did anything to help shield myself from the years and gravity to come. And now, when I wake up in the morning the creases in my face don't smooth out quite as easily. At the end of the day, my eyelids seem a little heavier. Everything just doesn't seem to spring back into place the way it used to.

If I had the opportunity to revisit my old self, I would have five key pieces of advice to make the aging process a little easier:

1. Work out every day. If you think you don't have time now, just wait. Get into the habit and stay in it. You have all the time in the world, you fool.

2. Moisturize!

3. Use sunscreen. I know, I know... You have olive skin and don't burn YET, but you will. Just wait. And having moles removed leaves scars.

4. Just because stuff is on sale, doesn't mean you should buy it... in multiple colors. You'll be getting rid of all of that stuff in five years. Invest in some really nice pieces that will last forever.

5. Finally, get a budget! You're going to wish you had started saving all that extra money, instead of spending it on entertainment that you didn't need and in five years won't be able to remember. All of those glasses of sauvignon blanc and dirty martinis could pay for your future children's education!

I'm terrible about moisturizing too and kept thinking about it while reading this book. So bad, I recently cut bangs to hide those not-so-fine lines on my forehead. I think that might have been my 1-5. Or maybe mine would have included don't squint or get that worried scrunched up look so much. (Especially without moisturizing!)

I don't know how old you are, but you remind me a lot of Ellie!

I think I am aging well, lookswise. Body-wise I feel about 85 due to chronic health problems.

I moisturize my face but it takes too much energy to do the rest of my body!

In place of moisturizing, I'd say, enough with all the expensive cleansers! I've tried so many and the best solution has been cold water!
Budgeting is definitely something I wish I'd started earlier. But alcohol has to be a line item in there somewhere!

Well said and all good pieces of advice! I think my Mom gave me that advice prior to age 29, but of course I had to age (not as gracefully) and figure it out on my own!
